The elves gathered in Gizmo’s workshop once again.
No one spoke above a whisper.
No one even moved much.
It was as if the whole North Pole was holding its breath.
The spaceship-shaped hole in the roof let in a slow drift of snowflakes, quiet as feathers.
Then the workshop doors opened.
Mrs. Claus stepped inside.
She looked at the elves — their worried eyes, their trembling mittens, their anxious hearts — and she gave them the warmest smile she could.
“It’s alright,” she said softly. “I’m here. Tell me what we know.”
Gizmo stepped forward, his goggles pushed up crookedly.
“Well… I was building the spaceship for Santa. And Waldo and Santa climbed inside. And Waldo pressed the UP button… before I finished installing the…” He held up a bright red circular panel.
“Before you finished installing the DOWN button,” Mrs. Claus finished gently.
Gizmo nodded, his voice small. “Yes. They… can’t come back. Not yet.”
The elves’ faces fell as one.
Mrs. Claus took a slow breath — steady and calm, even now.
“Alright,” she said. “Then we’ll bring them home. What do you need, Gizmo?”
Gizmo swallowed.
“I can build another spaceship. I can get them back before Christmas.”
Then his voice got even softer.
“But… I would have to switch the Appendapulator from toy-making to spaceship-making.”

The elves gasped.
A few hands flew to hearts.
One elf dropped a candy cane in shock.
Mrs. Claus nodded thoughtfully.
“So if we save Santa,” she said, “there may be no toys for Christmas.”
Gizmo nodded again.
“And if we keep making toys… Santa may not make it home in time.”
The room was quiet again.
Mrs. Claus looked around at all the elves she loved.
This was more than a problem.
This was a choice.
Save Santa and have no presents?
Or make presents… and have no Santa to deliver them.
